Abū Aḥmad al-Zubayrī narrated, through ʿAmr ibn Thābit, from his father:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked about Jaʿfar. A man replied, ‘I saw him when another man thrust a spear into him; he pressed forward along the shaft, struck the assailant, and the two of them died together.’ (1)
Saʿdān ibn al-Walīd reported, through ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbās:
“While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting and Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays was nearby, he said, ‘O Asmāʾ! Jaʿfar has just passed by in the company of Gabriel and Michael. He informed me that he met the idolaters on such-and-such a day and extended his greeting, so return it to him.’
“He then said: ‘He met the idolaters and received seventy-three wounds to the front of his body. He grasped the banner in his right hand and it was severed; he took it with his left and that too was severed. Allah has compensated me for my two hands with two wings with which I fly alongside Gabriel and Michael in Paradise, eating of its fruits.’ (2)
Asmāʾ reported:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me, summoned Jaʿfar’s children, drew them close and inhaled their scent, and his eyes filled with tears. I asked, “Messenger of Allah, has any news of Jaʿfar reached you?” He said, “Yes, he was killed today.” We rose and wept, and he left. He later returned and said, “Prepare food for the family of Jaʿfar, for they are occupied and unable to look after themselves.” (3)
