O Fāṭimah, if you give way to grief, that is excusable,
and if you do not, such is the ordained course.
Return, then, to patient acceptance, for in it lie Allah’s reward
and an abundant share of His grace.
Speak of your father without ever tiring—
for can any words truly requite your father’s excellence?
Your father’s grave is the noblest of all graves,
and in it rests the Messenger, the master of humankind. (1)
The line of Abū Sufyān has now died out. Ibn Saʿd is the one who made this remark.
Hammād ibn Salamah narrated, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib:
Abū Sufyān ibn al-Ḥārith used to stand in prayer at midday during the summer heat until the time when prayer is disliked, and then he would continue praying from ẓuhr until ʿaṣr. (2)
Hammād ibn Salamah also narrated, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwa, from his father:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Abū Sufyān ibn al-Ḥārith is the leader of the young men of Paradise.”
Later he performed the pilgrimage. While the barber was shaving his head, a wart on his scalp was cut; the wound became infected and he died, whereupon the people regarded him as a martyr. (3)
It is also said that he died in the year 20 AH in Madinah.
33 – Jaʿfar ibn Abī Sufyān*
He was a Companion, and he together with his father held their ground on the Day of Hunayn. He lived on until the middle of Muʿāwiyah’s caliphate. This was stated by Ibn Saʿd.
