27 – Nawfal ibn al-Harith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib al-Hāshimī*
A cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—al-Harith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib al-Hāshimī—he bore the kunya Abū al-Harith and was the brother of Abū (1) Sufyān ibn al-Harith.
Nawfal was older than his paternal uncle al-ʿAbbās.
He fought at Badr on the side of the idolaters, was taken prisoner, and was ransomed by his uncle al-ʿAbbās. He later embraced Islam and emigrated in the Year of the Trench.
It is also reported that the Prophet ﷺ established a pact of brotherhood between him and al-ʿAbbās; in the pre-Islamic era they had been business partners and enjoyed a close friendship.
Nawfal witnessed the Pledge of Riḍwān, and on the day of Ḥunayn he supplied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with three thousand lances and stood his ground beside him. I know of no hadith from him and no further information beyond what I have just cited.
Some say he died in the year 20 AH; others place his death in 15 AH. In his day he was the eldest of Banū Hāshim.
His son:
28 – al-Ḥārith ibn Nawfal ibn al-Harith al-Hāshimī**
He embraced Islam alongside his father and governed Mecca on behalf of ʿUmar and ʿUthmān.
The Prophet ﷺ had also appointed him to certain administrative duties.
It is said that he later settled in Basra and built a house there.
He died during the caliphate of ʿUthmān at roughly seventy years of age.
