Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi
  1. Abū Jandal, al-ʿĀṣ ibn Suhayl ibn ʿAmr al-ʿĀmirī*—
son of ʿAbd Shams ibn ʿAbd Wudd ibn Naṣr ibn Ḥisl ibn ʿĀmir ibn Luʾayy ibn Ghalib ibn Fihr, of the ʿĀmir clan of Quraysh.

His personal name was al-ʿĀṣ.

He was one of the distinguished Companions. After accepting Islam, his father detained him and put him in fetters. When the day of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah arrived, he escaped, hobbling in his chains, while his father stood before the Prophet ﷺ to draft the treaty.

Suhayl said, “This is the first person for whom I negotiate with you, O Muḥammad.” The Prophet replied, “Let him come to me.” Suhayl refused and sent him back, while Abū Jandal cried out, “O Muslims! Are you sending me back to disbelief?”

He later managed to flee.

His well-known story is recorded in the Ṣaḥīḥ (1) and in the books of Maghāzī.

Subsequently, he was set free, emigrated, and strove in jihad,

(1) Reported by al-Bukhari, no. 2700, Book of Reconciliation, chapter “Making peace with polytheists.” It states that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, concluded the Hudaybiyya treaty on three points: (i) whoever came to him from the polytheists would be returned, (ii) whoever left the Muslims for the polytheists would not be returned, and (iii) the Muslims could enter Mecca the following year, stay three days, and carry only travel weapons such as swords and bows. Abu Jandal then arrived hobbling in his shackles, and the Prophet returned him to them. Al-Bukhari also preserves a longer version of the treaty (nos. 2731–2732): Suhayl stipulated, “And that no man from us—even if he follows your religion—shall reach you unless you send him back to us.” The Muslims exclaimed, “Subhan Allah! How can a Muslim be returned to the polytheists?” Just then Abu Jandal b. Suhayl b. Amr appeared, dragging his chains after escaping from Mecca and throwing himself among the Muslims. Suhayl said, “This, O Muhammad, is the first one I demand you return to me.” The Prophet replied, “We have not yet completed the document.” Suhayl swore, “By Allah, I will never make peace with you on anything.” The Prophet pleaded, “Grant him to me,” but Suhayl refused until Makraz interjected, “Rather, we have granted him to you.” Abu Jandal cried, “O Muslims! Am I to be sent back to the polytheists when I have come as a Muslim? Do you not see what I have suffered?”—he had been severely tortured for Allah’s sake. The complete narration appears in Ibn Kathir, Al-Sira, 3/312-337, and Ibn Hisham, 2/318.
