Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He was poor, and Abu Bakr (1) used to support him.

Ibn Saʿd records: “He was short, with deep-set eyes and thick fingers; he lived fifty-six years. He died in the year 34 AH—may Allah be pleased with him.”

Beware, O Jari (2), of casting a scornful look at this Badr veteran because of a momentary lapse that once escaped him; it has already been forgiven, and he is among the people of Paradise.

And beware, O sectarian Rafidi (3), of hinting at the slander against the Mother of the Believers after the decisive text affirming her innocence, lest the Fire become inevitable for you.

21 – Abu ʿAbs ibn Jabr ibn ʿAmr al-Awsī * (B, T, S)
The son of Zayd ibn Jusham ibn Ḥārithah ibn al-Ḥārith al-Awsī. His given name is:

(1) Al-Bukhari records the episode (no. 4750, Tafsir, chapter: “If only, when you first heard it…”). At the end of the hadith he relates: “When Allah revealed my innocence, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq—who used to maintain Mistah b. Uthatha because of their kinship and the latter’s poverty—swore: ‘By Allah, I shall never again support Mistah after what he said about Aisha.’ Then Allah revealed: ‘Let not those of bounty and affluence among you swear to withhold support from their relatives, the poor, and the emigrants in the path of Allah. Let them pardon and overlook. Do you not wish that Allah forgive you? Allah is All-Forgiving, Merciful’ (Q 24:22). Abu Bakr said: ‘Indeed, by Allah, I do wish that Allah forgive me.’ He therefore resumed the stipend he had been giving him and added: ‘By Allah, I will never stop it again.’ (2) The hamzah in the word jariʾ (“bold”) has been softened so that it rhymes with al-Badri. The form is on the pattern faʿīl from the verb jaraʾa, “to rush into a matter without hesitation.” The printed edition mistakenly reads “jabri.” (3) For the origin of their nickname, see Abu al-Hasan al-Ashʿari, Maqalat al-Islamiyyin, 1/89.
