(1) The word al-Yamama originally meant “dove,” and was later applied to the well-known region east of the Hijaz inhabited by the Banu Hanifa. Several explanations have been offered for this naming; see Lisān al-ʿArab, Muʿjam al-Buldan, and al-Misbah al-Munir. For the brutal fighting at the Battle of al-Yamama between Khalid ibn al-Walid and Musaylima the Liar, consult al-Tabari, Taʾrikh, 3/281–301, and Ibn al-Athir, al-Kamil fi al-Taʾrikh, 2/361–367.
