Yūnus ibn Bukayr—through Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father—reported:
Safiyyah came on the Day of Uḥud carrying two garments intended for Ḥamzah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw her, he did not wish her to behold Ḥamzah in the state he was in, so he dispatched al-Zubayr to keep her back and he took the two garments.
Beside Ḥamzah lay a slain man from the Anṣār, and the Companions felt it improper to choose the finer garment exclusively for Ḥamzah. The Prophet ﷺ therefore said, “Draw lots between the two of them; whichever name is drawn for the better garment, it shall be his.” They cast lots, and Ḥamzah was shrouded in one garment and the Anṣārī in the other. Ibn Isḥāq—through Ismāʿīl ibn Umayyah, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās—reported:
The Prophet ﷺ said, “When your brothers were struck down at Uḥud, Allah placed their souls inside green birds that alight at the rivers of Paradise, eat of its fruits, and take shelter in lamps of gold hanging under the shade of the Throne. When they experienced the delight of their food, drink, and repose, they said, ‘Who will convey to our brothers that we are alive in Paradise, receiving provision, so that they will neither falter in battle nor grow weary of jihād?’ Allah said, ‘I shall convey it to them on your behalf.’”
