- Qudāmah ibn Maẓʿūn, Abū ʿAmr al-Jumaḥī *
He was among the earliest believers who fought at Badr. ʿUmar appointed him governor of Bahrain. Qudāmah was one of the maternal uncles of the Mother of the Believers Ḥafṣah and of Ibn ʿUmar, and he was married to their paternal aunt Ṣafiyyah bint al-Khaṭṭāb, herself one of the Emigrants.
Qudāmah also migrated to Abyssinia. On one occasion he drank wine, thinking it permissible and citing as evidence the Almighty’s words, “There is no blame on those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they may have consumed” (al-Māʾidah 5:93). ʿUmar therefore enforced the prescribed ḥadd (legal penalty) on him and removed him from the governorship of Bahrain. (1) ʿAbd al-Razzaq narrates it (no. 17076) from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, who said: ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmir b. Rabiʿa – whose father fought at Badr – informed me that ʿUmar b. al-Khattab appointed Qudamah b. Mazʿun governor of Bahrain; he was the maternal uncle of Hafsa and ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar. Al-Jarud, chief of ʿAbd al-Qays, arrived from Bahrain and said: “Commander of the Believers, Qudamah drank wine and became drunk. I have witnessed one of God’s legal limits and must report it to you.” ʿUmar asked, “Who will testify with you?” He replied, “Abu Hurayrah.” ʿUmar summoned Abu Hurayrah and said, “What is your testimony?” He answered, “I did not see him drink, but I saw him intoxicated.” ʿUmar responded, “You have over-reached in your testimony.” He then wrote to Qudamah ordering him to come from Bahrain. Al-Jarud said to ʿUmar, “Apply the Book of Allah to this matter.” ʿUmar replied, “Are you a plaintiff or a witness?” He said, “A witness.” ʿUmar said, “Then you have delivered your testimony.” The next morning al-Jarud returned and said, “Carry out God’s prescribed punishment on him.” ʿUmar answered, “You appear to be a plaintiff; only one man has testified with you.” Al-Jarud exclaimed, “I adjure you by Allah!” ʿUmar said, “Either hold your tongue or I shall deal harshly with you.” Al-Jarud retorted, “By Allah, that is not just: your cousin drinks and you would harm me?” Abu Hurayrah said, “If you doubt our testimony, send for the daughter of al-Walid; ask her, for she is Qudamah’s wife.” ʿUmar sent for Hind bt. al-Walid and adjured her, and she confirmed the charge against her husband. ʿUmar then said to Qudamah, “I am going to flog you.” He replied, “Had I actually drunk, as they claim, you would have had no right to whip me.” ʿUmar asked, “Why?” He answered…
