so I went to sleep and in a dream I saw a spring flowing for ʿUthmān. I told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, “That is the fruit of his deeds.” (1)
Hammād ibn Salamah relates: ʿAlī ibn Zayd narrated to us from Yūsuf ibn Mihrān, from Ibn ʿAbbās, something similar, adding: When the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died he said, “Join (2) our righteous forerunner, ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn.” (3)
Al-Wāqidī reports: Maʿmar told us, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh, that ʿUmar said: “When ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn died—without having been killed—his status fell in my eyes until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself passed away. I said, ‘Alas, our best men are dying!’ Then Abū Bakr died, and ʿUthmān’s position in my heart returned to its former standing.” (4)
ʿĀʾishah bint Qudāmah said: “The sons of Maẓʿūn closely resembled one another. ʿUthmān was very dark-skinned and had a full beard.” (5)
