that you have in me an example?’ (the ḥadith) 1.
Afterwards, she came back to them perfumed, looking as radiant as a bride.
Hammād ibn Zayd narrated: Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAyyāsh told us, from Abū Qilābah, that ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn had seated himself for solitary worship. The Prophet ﷺ came to him and said, ‘O ʿUthmān! Allah did not send me with monasticism; the best religion in Allah’s sight is the upright, easygoing monotheism.’ 2
ʿĀʾishah bint Qudāmah said: When they emigrated, ʿUthmān, Qudāmah, and ʿAbd Allāh—the sons of Maẓʿūn—along with Maʿmar ibn al-Ḥārith, took lodging with ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salamah al-ʿAjlānī.
Al-Wāqidī remarked: The family of Maẓʿūn were among those who left for the Hijrah in full, and their houses in Mecca were shuttered. 3
ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah related: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ demarcated the plot where the family of Maẓʿūn’s house stands today in Medina. 4
(1) The transmitters are trustworthy; Abu Burda is the son of Abu Musa al-Ashari. Ibn Saad also records the report (3/1/287), and Abd al-Razzaq (no. 10375) transmits it from Mamar, from al-Zuhri, from Urwa and Amra, from Aisha: “The wife of Uthman ibn Mazun—her name was Khawla bint Hakim—entered upon Aisha in a neglected state. Aisha asked, ‘What is wrong with you?’ She replied, ‘My husband spends the night in prayer and the day in fasting.’ Later the Prophet came, and Aisha told him. He met Uthman and said, ‘O Uthman, monasticism has not been prescribed for us. Do you not have in me a model to follow? By Allah, I am the one who fears Allah most and safeguards His limits best among you.’ All its transmitters are reliable.
(2) Reported by Ibn Saad (3/1/287); we have not located a biography for Muawiya ibn Ayyash, while the rest of the transmitters are trustworthy. Abd al-Razzaq also narrates it, from Abu Qilaba, with the wording: “Whoever withdraws from marriage is not one of us.” Ibn Abi Shaykh transmits it through Ibn Jurayj, from al-Mughira, from Uthman, with a variant wording. See al-Dur al-Manthur 2/309.
