Al-Waqidī said: ʿUmar ibn ʿUthmān (1) al-Yarbūʿī narrated to us, from Salama ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn (2) ʿUmar ibn Abī Salama and others, who said:
Abū Salama was present at the Battle of Uḥud. He was living in the district of al-ʿĀliyah among the clan of Banū Umayyah ibn Zayd. He was wounded at Uḥud and spent a month tending his injury.
When the month of Muḥarram began, the Prophet ﷺ summoned him and said, “Set out with this expedition.”
The Prophet fastened a banner for him and said, “March until you reach the territory of Banū Asad, then launch (3) a raid against them.”
One hundred and fifty men were with him. They marched until they reached the nearest (4) settlement at their watering places, captured a herd of their livestock, and then returned to Medina after a little more than ten (5) nights.
ʿUmar ibn ʿUthmān said: ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUbayd related to me:
When Abū Salama entered Medina his wound reopened, and he died with three days remaining (6) of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, that is, in the fourth year. It is also said that Abū Salama died in the third year.
