we shall return. O Allah, with You I reckon my affliction; reward me for it and replace it with something better.’
When Abū Salama was at the point of death I recited those words. I was about to add, ‘and replace it with something better,’ but I thought, ‘And who could possibly be better than Abū Salama?’ I hesitated until, in the end, I did say it. When my waiting period was over, Abū Bakr proposed to me and I declined; ʿUmar then proposed and I declined. After that the Prophet ﷺ sent a proposal to me.
I replied, ‘Welcome to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and to his envoy.’ ⦗1⦘ And she went on to relate the remainder of the report. ⦗2⦘

(2) The report is found in: Muslim, no. 918, Book of Funerals, chapter “What should be said when a calamity strikes,” through several chains going back to Umar b. Kathir b. Aflah, from Ibn Safina—the freedman of Umm Salama—from Umm Salama.
It is also recorded by Ahmad, 6/313; Abu Dawud, no. 3119, Book of Funerals, chapter “On saying the *istirjaʿ* (inna lillahi…);” and by al-Nasaʾi, 6/81, Book of Marriage, chapter “Marrying the son of one’s wet-nurse,” all through the isnad of Hammad b. Salama → Thabit al-Bunani → Ibn ʿUmar b. Abi Salama → his father → Umm Salama, who said: “Abu Salama said….”
Al-Tirmidhi, no. 3506 (Book of Supplications, chapter “Supplication at a misfortune”); Ibn Majah, no. 1598 (Book of Funerals, chapter “Patience at a misfortune”); and al-Hakim, 3/629, all transmit it through ʿUmar b. Abi Salama → his mother Umm Salama → Abu Salama.
Malik also cites it (Muwattaʾ, p. 163, Book of Funerals, chapter “A comprehensive section on affliction”) through Rabiʿa b. Abi ʿAbd al-Rahman, from Umm Salama.
The fuller wording preserved in the Musnad relates that Umm Salama informed the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, that she was a woman prone to jealousy, that she had young children, and that none of her guardians was present. The Prophet replied: “As for your children, Allah will suffice you concerning them; as for your jealousy, I shall pray that Allah remove it; and as for your guardians, none of them—present or absent—will object to me.” She then told her son ʿUmar to conclude the marriage. The Prophet added: “I shall not reduce anything of the bridal gift I gave your sister: two millstones, two water-skins, and a leather cushion stuffed with palm-fibre.”
After the marriage the Prophet would visit her, and she would place her infant daughter Zaynab in her lap to nurse, whereupon the Prophet—out of modesty—would withdraw. When this happened repeatedly, ʿAmmar b. Yasir (her maternal brother) removed the child, telling her not to inconvenience the Prophet. The Prophet entered, asked, “Where is Zaynab?” and, finding the child taken away, consummated the marriage. He then said: “If you wish, I can allot you seven nights, as I do for the other wives.”
