“…‘Who did this to you?’ and you will answer, ‘So-and-so.’
He then summoned ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf and said, “Come close, O trustee of Allah—and the trustee in heaven as well. May Allah grant you rightful authority over your wealth. Indeed, there is a supplication I have kept in reserve for you.”
He replied, “Choose it for me, O Messenger of Allah.”
The Prophet said, “You have placed a trust on my shoulders: may Allah increase your wealth,” and he joined him in brotherhood with ʿUthmān.
Next he called Ṭalḥah and al-Zubayr; when they approached he said, “You two are my disciples, like the disciples of Jesus,” and he paired them together.
Then he called Saʿd and ʿAmmār and said, “O ʿAmmār, the rebellious faction will kill you,” after which he paired them together.
After that he called Abū al-Dardāʾ and Salmān and said, “O Salmān, you are one of us—the People of the House—and Allah has granted you knowledge of the first and the last. O Abū al-Dardāʾ, if you censure them, they will censure you; if you leave them, they will leave you; and if you flee from them, they will overtake you. So lend them your honour until the Day when you will be in need of it.” Then he paired them together.
He then looked at Ibn ʿUmar and said, “Praise belongs to Allah who guides out of misguidance.”
ʿAlī said, “O Messenger of Allah, my soul has gone and my back has broken when you left me till the end.”
He replied, “I kept you back only for myself. Your rank with me is that of Aaron with Moses, and you are my heir.”
ʿAlī asked, “What shall I inherit from you?”
He said, “The Book of Allah and the sunnah of His Prophet. You will be with me in my palace in Paradise together with Fāṭimah,” and he recited: “as brothers, on couches facing one another” (al-Ḥijr 15:47).
