to Marwān, the governor of Medina, instructing him to secure the pledge of allegiance for his son Yazīd.
A man from the Syrian army asked, “What is keeping you?”
He replied, “I am waiting for Saʿīd ibn Zayd to come and pledge, for he is the chief of the town; once he pledges, the rest of the people will do the same.”
The man said, “Shall I go and bring him to you?” … and he recounted the remainder of the incident. (1)
We were informed—and heard directly—from Ḥanbal; Ibn al-Ḥuṣayn informed us; Ibn al-Mudhhib informed us; al-Qaṭīʿī informed us; ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Wakīʿ narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us, from Ḥuṣayn and Manṣūr, from Hilāl ibn Yasāf, from Saʿīd ibn Zayd—and Ḥuṣayn said: from Ibn Ẓālim, from Saʿīd ibn Zayd—that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Steady, Ḥirāʾ! Upon you are only a prophet, a man of truth, or a martyr.”
With him on the mountain were the Prophet, Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, ʿAlī, Ṭalḥah, al-Zubayr, Saʿd, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and Saʿīd ibn Zayd. (2)
Ibn Saʿd reported: Abū Ḍamrah informed us, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, who said: Nāfiʿ told me, from Ibn ʿUmar, that cries for help reached him about Saʿīd ibn Zayd on a Friday after the sun had risen high. Ibn ʿUmar went to him at al-ʿAqīq and missed the congregational Friday prayer. (3)
It was also recorded by al-Bukhārī. (4)
Ismāʿīl ibn Umayyah said, on the authority of Nāfiʿ: “Saʿīd ibn Zayd died while suffering from dysentery.”
