al-Raḥmān (1) a report with the same wording, on the authority of his father.
Al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān likewise narrated it from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar (2) in similar terms.
Ibn Abī Ḥāzim (3) added in his version: “Arwā asked Saʿīd to pray for her and said, ‘I have wronged you.’” He replied, “I will not repudiate anything Allah has bestowed upon me.”
I say: In precedence and eminence Saʿīd was in no way below the rank of the six members of the consultative council. ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—only left him out so that no suspicion of personal interest might remain, for Saʿīd was both his son-in-law and his cousin. Had he included him among the people of the shūrā, the Rāfiḍī would have alleged that he had shown favouritism (4) to his cousin; therefore he excluded from it his own son and his male relatives as well.
Thus let every deed (5) be done purely for Allah.
Khālid al-Ṭaḥḥān narrated from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Muḥārib ibn Dithār, who said: “He wrote …”
(1) Al-Alaʾ b. ʿAbd al-Rahman—also known as Ibn Yaʿqub al-Harqi, Abu Shibl al-Madani, a freedman of the clan al-Hurqa, and Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Yaʿqub—transmitted reports from various Companions. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr cites him in al-Istiʿab 4/192, quoting al-Zubayr b. Bakkar: “Ibrahim b. Hamza related to us from ʿAbd al-ʿAziz b. Abi Hazim, from al-ʿAlaʾ b. ʿAbd al-Rahman, from his father, that Arwa…,” and he reproduces the incident. The same chain appears in Ibn ʿAsakir’s History. The hadith is also recorded by Ahmad 2/388, Muslim (no. 1611), and Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi 1/277 through the line Suhayl b. Abi Salih → his father → Abu Hurayra.
(2) The word “ibn” is missing in the printed edition. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr includes it in al-Istiʿab 4/191 and attributes the report to al-Zubayr b. Bakkar. Abu Nuʿaym reproduces it in Hilyat al-awliyaʾ 1/96 via al-ʿUmari → Nafiʿ → Ibn ʿUmar; al-Bukhari cites it in the chapter on usurpation (Mazalim), 5/76, through Muslim b. Ibrahim → Ibn al-Mubarak → Musa b. ʿUqba → Salim → his father.
(3) The base manuscript reads “Hatim,” but the correct form, noted in its margin, is: “said Ibn Abi Hazim with a z,” that is ʿAbd al-ʿAziz mentioned above, whose kunya is Abu Mahmud.
(4) The printed text mistakenly reads “Khalaf.”
(5) The printed text mistakenly reads “al-ʿahd.”
