He spread it out, and once it lay flat He strengthened it—perfectly even—and anchored the mountains upon it. (1)
Hisham ibn ʿUrwah narrated, as Ibn Abi al-Zinad reports from him, that word reached him that Zayd ibn ʿAmr was in Syria. When the news of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him, he set off intending to meet him, but the people of Mayfaʿah in Syria killed him. (2)
Al-Waqidi related that Zayd died and was buried at the foot of Mount Hiraʾ, whereas Ibn Ishaq said he was killed in the lands of Lakhm.
ʿAbd al-ʿAziz (3) ibn al-Mukhtar reported: Musa ibn ʿUqbah informed us, and Salim told me that he heard Ibn ʿUmar relate from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he met Zayd ibn ʿAmr in the lower part of Baldah before revelation. The Prophet offered Zayd a food tray containing meat, but Zayd refused to eat and said, “I do not eat what you slaughter on your stone altars; I eat only that over which the name of Allah has been pronounced.”
This report is recorded by al-Bukhari, who adds at its conclusion: Zayd used to censure Quraysh, saying, “The ewe is created by Allah; He sends down water for it from the sky and brings forth for it from the earth, yet you slaughter it without mentioning Allah’s name!” (4)
