Yūsuf ibn Aḥmad ibn Abī Bakr al-Ḥajjār informed us; Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Qādir informed us; Saʿīd ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Bannā (1) reported to us (ḥ).
Aḥmad ibn al-Muʾayyad also informed us; al-Ḥasan ibn Isḥāq informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn al-Zāghūnī related to us; and I read it to ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Munʿim in the year 93 AH, from Abū al-Yaman al-Kindī—by authorisation in the year 608 AH—while Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muhtadī Billāh informed us. They said:
Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Zaynabī informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Warrāq informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; ʿĪsā ibn Ḥammād reported to us; al-Layth ibn Saʿd informed us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr, who said:
“I once saw Zayd ibn ʿAmr ibn Nufayl standing with his back against the Kaʿbah, proclaiming, ‘People of Quraysh! By Allah, not one of you is upon the religion of Abraham except me.’
He also rescued infant girls destined for burial alive. Whenever a man intended to kill his daughter he would say, ‘Wait—do not kill her; I will provide for her.’ He would then take the child, and when she had grown up he would say to her father, ‘If you wish, I will return her to you; and if you wish, I will go on supporting her.’ (2)
This is a sound (ṣaḥīḥ), singular report; al-Layth alone transmitted it, and he received it from Hishām only by written correspondence.
Al-Bukhārī cited it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (3) in suspended form, saying: ‘Al-Layth stated, “Hishām wrote to me,” and then mentioned it.’
Ibn Isḥāq likewise heard the report directly from Hishām,
