and I had kept it only for this day. (1)
Ibn Saʿd reports: Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar informed us; he said, “Furwah ibn Zubayd (2) narrated to us from ʿĀʾishah bint Saʿd, who said:
‘My father sent five thousand of his zakah to Marwān, and when he died he left two hundred and fifty thousand.’ (3)
Al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār said: Toward the end of his life, Saʿd withdrew to a palace he had built on the outskirts of Ḥamrāʾ al-Asad. (4)
It is related from Umm Salamah that she said:
‘When Saʿd died and his bier was brought in before her, she began to weep, saying, “The last remnant of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”’
Al-Nuʿmān ibn Rāshid narrates, on the authority of al-Zuhri, from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd, who said: ‘Saʿd was the last of the Emigrants to die.’ (5)
Al-Madāʾinī, Abū ʿUbaydah and a group of others said: He passed away in the year 55 AH.
(1) Reported by al-Hakim, 3/496, and by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, no. 316. Al-Haythami cites it in Majmaʿ al-zawaʾid, 3/25, and states: “All its transmitters are reliable, except that al-Zuhri never met Saʿd.”
(2) He is Farwa b. Yazid. He narrated from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn ʿUmar, and also from ʿAʾisha bint Saʿd. Among those who transmitted from him are Abu Bakr al-Hanafi and Muhammad b. ʿUmar; see al-Jarh wa-l-taʿdil, 7/83, and Ibn Makula’s al-Ikmal, 4/171. In the printed edition his name was misread as “Rasd,” and in Ibn Saʿd’s Tabaqat, 3/1/105, as “Zubayr.” The report is found in the Tabaqat as already indicated.
(3) The printed text has inserted the word “dirham.” We do not know on what grounds this was done.
(4) A locality eight miles from Madinah, on the left side of the road leading to Dhu al-Hulayfa. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached it while pursuing the polytheists on the day of Uhud. See Ibn al-Qayyim, Zad al-maʿad, 3/242, Muʾassasat al-Risala edition.
(5) Reported by al-Hakim, 3/496.
