ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Maghrāʾ, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn al-Marzubān, from ʿIkrima, from Ibn ʿAbbās:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the Day of Uḥud, “O Allah, answer Saʿd,” three times. (1)
Ibn Wahb narrated: Abū Ṣakhr related to me, from Yazīd ibn Qusayṭ, from Isḥāq ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, who said that my father told me:
ʿAbdullāh ibn Jaḥsh said on the Day of Uḥud, “Shall we not withdraw and call upon Allah, Exalted is He?”
They moved to one side, whereupon Saʿd supplicated:
“My Lord! When we meet the enemy tomorrow, let me confront a man strong in might, fierce in assault. I will fight him and he will fight me; then grant me victory over him so that I may kill him and take his spoils.” ʿAbdullāh said āmīn.
Then ʿAbdullāh prayed, “O Allah, grant me tomorrow a man strong in might, fierce in assault. I will fight him and he will fight me; then he will overcome me and cut off my nose and ears. When I meet You tomorrow and You ask, ‘O ʿAbdullāh, why were your nose and ears severed?’ I will reply, ‘For Your sake and for Your Messenger’s.’ You will say, ‘You have spoken the truth.’ ”
Saʿd remarked, “His supplication was better than mine. I saw him at the close of the day with his nose and ears hanging by a thread.” (2)
