Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Saʿd (1) with two prisoners, while neither Ammar nor I brought anything (2).

Sharik narrates—from Abu Ishaq—who said:
“The most formidable of the Companions were four: ʿUmar, ʿAli, al-Zubayr, and Saʿd (3).”

Abu Yaʿla records in his Musnad: Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna told us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Qays al-Raqashi told us; Ayyub narrated, from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:
“We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when he said, ‘A man from the people of Paradise will now enter through this door.’ Then Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas appeared (4).”

Rishdin ibn Saʿd (5) transmits—from al-Hajjaj ibn Shaddad, from Abu Salih al-Ghifari, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr—that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The first person to enter through this door is a man from the people of Paradise.”
Thereupon Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas came in (6).

(1) The name “Saʿd” is missing from the printed edition. (2) All the transmitters are reliable, but Abu ʿUbayda did not hear from his father, so the chain is broken. The report is also found in Abu Dawud, no. 3388 (Book of Sales, chapter: Partnership without Capital); al-Nasaʾi, 7/57 (chapter: Partnership of Bodies) and 319 (chapter: Partnership without Money); Ibn Majah, no. 2288 (Book of Trade, chapter: Partnership and Muḍaraba), through several routes from Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu ʿUbayda, from ʿAbd Allah; and in al-Tabarani, no. 297, through Zakariya ibn Abi Zayda, from Abu Ishaq with the same chain. (3) Al-Isaba, 4/163. (4) ʿAbd Allah ibn Qays al-Raqashi. Al-ʿUqayli states in al-Duʿafaʾ: “ʿAbd Allah ibn Qays al-Raqashi, from Ayyub—his hadith is not preserved, is unsupported, and is known only through him,” and he then cites this very narration. Al-Hakim, 3/499, also transmitted it via al-Khuṣayb ibn Naṣiḥ, from ʿAbda ibn Naʾil, from ʿAʾisha, from her father Saʿd; he declared it sound and al-Dhahabi concurred. (5) The word “Rushdin” is omitted from the printed text. (6) The chain is weak because of Rushdin ibn Saʿd. Ibn Yunus remarks: “He was righteous in his religion, but the heedlessness that sometimes overcomes the pious overtook him, so he mixed up hadith.” The compiler of al-Kanz (no. 37112) also cites the report, attributing it to Ibn ʿAdi and Ibn ʿAsakir.
