Yasāf, from Saʿīd himself, who said, “Be still, Ḥirāʾ!”

Ibn Abī al-Khayr informed us; ʿAbd al-Ghanī the ḥāfiẓ wrote to us, saying that al-Mubārak ibn al-Mubārak al-Simsār had informed them; al-Niʿālī informed us; Abū al-Qāsim ibn al-Mundhir informed us; Ismāʿīl aṣ-Ṣaffār narrated to us; ad-Daqīqī narrated to us; Yūnus ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; al-Layth narrated from Yazīd ibn al-Hād, from Abū Bakr ibn Ḥazm, who said:

Arwā bint Uways came to Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥazm and said, “Saʿīd ibn Zayd ibn ʿAmr ibn Nufayl has put up a fence (1) on my land. Go to him and speak to him, for by Allah, if he does not remove it I will cry out against him in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”

He answered, “Do not offend a Companion of the Messenger of Allah. He would never wrong you; he is not the sort to seize anyone’s right.”

She left and went to ʿUmārah ibn ʿAmr and ʿAbd Allah ibn Salamah, saying, “Go to Saʿīd ibn Zayd; he has wronged me and built a fence on my property. By Allah, if he does not take it down, I will raise my voice against him in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”

The two men set out until they reached him on his land in al-ʿAqīq. He asked, “What has brought you here?”

They replied, “Arwā sent us. She claims you have erected a fence on her land and has sworn by Allah that if you do not remove it she will denounce you in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We thought it best to come and remind you.”

He said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Whoever seizes a handspan of land without right will have it hung around his neck on the Day of Resurrection from seven earths.’ Let her come and take whatever is her due. O Allah, if she has lied about me, do not let her die until You blind her sight and make her death occur there. Go back and tell her that.”

She came, demolished the fence and built a house, and hardly any time passed before
