Ahmad ibn Salamah informed us, through Ibn Kulayb; Ibn Bayān informed us; Ibn Makhlad informed us; Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār informed us; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah narrated to us; Marwān narrated to us—and he related the same report.
Al-Qaʿnabi and Khālid ibn Makhlad both said:
Sulaymān ibn Bilāl narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir ibn Rabīʿah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ could not sleep one night and said, ‘Would that some righteous man from among my Companions would guard me tonight.’ She added: We then heard the clatter of arms. The Messenger of Allah asked, ‘Who is that?’ Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ replied, ‘It is I, O Messenger of Allah! I have come to guard you.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then slept until I heard his heavy breathing (1).”
Abū Bakr al-Ḥanafī ʿAbd al-Kabīr related: Bukayr ibn Mismār narrated to us, from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd:
“His father Saʿd was tending some sheep when his son ʿUmar arrived. On seeing him, Saʿd said, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of this rider!’ When ʿUmar reached him he said, ‘Father, have you accepted to live as a Bedouin shepherd while people in Madinah are wrestling over authority?’ Saʿd struck ʿUmar’s chest and said, ‘Be quiet, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say (2): “Allah loves the devout, content, and inconspicuous servant (3).”’
Rawḥ and al-Anṣārī also transmitted it—the wording is that of al-Anṣārī: Ibn ʿAwn informed us, from Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Aswad, from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd, who said:
Saʿd said, “Indeed, I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ …”
