Ibn Zanjawayh related: ʿAbd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Maʿmar (1) informed us, from Ayyub, from ʿAʾishah bint Saʿd, who said—I heard her (2) declare: “I am the daughter of the Emigrant for whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, on the Day of Uhud, ransomed him with his own father and mother.”
Al-Aʿmash transmitted—from Ibrahim—that ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿud said, “I saw Saʿd on the Day of Badr fighting like a mounted knight among men” (3).
Some narrated it from al-Aʿmash with the wording: from Ibrahim, from ʿAlqamah.
Yunus ibn Bukayr reported—from ʿUthman ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Waqqasi—from al-Zuhri, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a detachment that included Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas to a sector of the Hijaz called Rabigh, near al-Juhfah. The polytheists fell upon the Muslims, but Saʿd protected them that day with his arrows; this was the very first armed encounter in Islam. Saʿd then recited:
Has word reached the Messenger of Allah that I
Shielded my companions with the points of my shafts?
No archer, O Messenger of Allah, was ever credited
With an arrow loosed at a foe before me. (4)
”
Al-Bukhari records, through Marwan ibn Muʿawiyah, that Hisham ibn Hisham said: “I heard Saʿid ibn al-Musayyab say: I heard Saʿd report: ‘On the Day of Uhud the Messenger of Allah ﷺ emptied his quiver for me and said, “Shoot! May my father and mother be your ransom.”’” (5)
