the cause of Allah was Saʿd, and he was one of the Prophet’s maternal uncles (1).
Hatim ibn Ismaʿil narrated—from Bukayr ibn Mismar, from ʿAmir ibn Saʿd, from his father—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ combined his father and mother for him. He said, “A man from the polytheists had been wreaking havoc among the Muslims, so the Messenger of Allah said, ‘Shoot! May my father and mother be ransomed for you.’ ” I therefore fitted an arrow that had no iron head, struck him on the forehead, and he fell, his private parts uncovered. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molar teeth could be seen (2).
ʿAbd Allah ibn Muṣʿab reported: Musa ibn ʿUqbah told us, on the authority of Ibn Shihab, that on the Day of Uhud Saʿd killed with an arrow that had been shot at the Muslims. It killed, was thrown back, the enemy shot it again, Saʿd seized it and shot a second time and killed, it was returned once more, and he shot a third time and killed again. The people were amazed at what he had done. Its chain of transmission is broken.
Ibn Ishaq said: Salih ibn Kaysan related to me, from some of Saʿd’s family, from Saʿd, that on the Day of Uhud he was shooting arrows. He said, “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ handing me arrows and saying, ‘Shoot! May my father and mother be ransomed for you,’ even handing me an arrow without an iron head, and I shot with it (3).”
