The commander, Abū Isḥāq, the Qurayshī of the Zuhrah clan, originally from Mecca.
He was one of the Ten Companions who were promised Paradise, one of the earliest converts, one of those who fought at Badr and were present at al-Hudaybiyyah, and one of the six members of the consultative council (shūrā).
He transmitted a sizeable body of hadith. In the two Ṣaḥīḥs fifteen of his reports are recorded; al-Bukhārī alone has five that are exclusive to him, while Muslim has eighteen.
Among those who received hadith from him are: Ibn ʿUmar, ʿĀʾishah, Ibn ʿAbbās, al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd, and his own children—ʿĀmir, ʿUmar, Muḥammad (1), Muṣʿab, Ibrāhīm, and ʿĀʾishah—as well as Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, ʿUmar ibn Maymūn, al-Aḥnaf ibn Qays, ʿAlqamah ibn Qays, Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, Mujāhid, Shuraīḥ ibn ʿUbayd of Ḥimṣ, Ayman al-Makkī, Bishr ibn Saʿīd, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, Abū Ṣāliḥ Dhakwān, ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, and many others besides.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Salām ibn al-Muṭahhar al-Tamīmī informed us; ʿAbd al-Muʿizz (2) ibn Muḥammad conveyed to us in his book; Tamīm ibn Abī Saʿīd informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed us; Abū ʿAmr ibn Ḥamdān informed us; Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us; Shuʿbah related to us from Abū ʿAwn:
“I heard Jābir ibn Samurah say: ʿUmar said to Saʿd, ‘Indeed…’”
