—by Allah’s grace—his feet, and set him among the foliage of Firdaws; therefore, no blame attaches to him.
Ibn Abī ʿUmar informed us; Hanbal informed us; Ibn al-Ḥuṣayn narrated to us; Ibn al-Mudhhib narrated to us; Abū Bakr narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, saying, “My father related to me”; Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us; al-Aʿmash, from Shaqīq, reported:
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (ibn ʿAwf) entered upon Umm Salama and said, “Mother of the Believers, I fear I may be ruined. Among Quraysh I possess the most wealth; I have just sold a plot of land for forty thousand dinars.”
She replied, “My son, give in charity! For I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Among my Companions are some who will never see me again after we part.’”
So I went to ʿUmar and told him what she had said. He went to her and asked, “By Allah, am I among them?”
She answered, “O Allah, no—and I shall not acquit anyone after you.”
This report was also transmitted by Aḥmad, from Abū Muʿāwiyah, from al-Aʿmash, who said: from Shaqīq, from Umm Salama. (1)
Zāʾidah narrated from ʿĀṣim, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
There was some dispute between Khālid and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Leave my Companions— or, ‘my close Companions— for if one of you were to spend the like of Mount Uhud in gold, he would not equal a single mudd of what they gave, nor even half of it.’” (2)
