Ibn al-Mubarak said: Maʿmar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, who stated:
“During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Ibn ʿAwf gave half of his wealth—four thousand dinars—in charity. Later he donated forty thousand dinars, equipped five hundred horses in the cause of Allah, and then outfitted five hundred riding camels, also in the cause of Allah; most of his fortune came from commerce (1).”
Ibn al-Mubarak recorded this report in his work Al-Zuhd.
Sulayman ibn Bint Shurayḥbīl related to us; Khālid ibn Yazīd ibn Abī Mālik informed us, from his father, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, from Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, from his father:

He asked, “What shall I lend, O Messenger of Allah?”
The Prophet ﷺ sent word to him: “Gabriel came to me and said, ‘Command him to honor the guest, to give during times of calamity, and to feed the poor (2).’”
Khālid ibn al-Hārith—and others—stated:
“Muhammad ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, from Abū Salamah, from his father, who said: ‘I saw Paradise, and I was entering it on my hands and knees; I perceived that only the poor will enter it.’”
