Imam Ahmad also relates in the Musnad, through al-Haytham ibn Kharijah, from Rishdin, from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Walid: he heard Abu Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman report—from his father—a narration to the same effect (1).
Hisham transmits—from Qatadah, from al-Hasan, from al-Mughira ibn Shuʿba—an identical version.
Zurara ibn Awfa likewise reports, from al-Mughira, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed behind ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAwf.
A similar chain comes from Khulaid ibn Daʿlij, from al-Hasan, from al-Mughira; however, al-Hasan was given to tadlis and never actually heard from al-Mughira.
ʿIsa ibn Yunus transmits—from ʿUthman ibn ʿAtaʾ, from his father (2), from Ibn ʿUmar—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAwf with a military detachment and fastened the banner for him with his own hand (3).
ʿUthman is weak, yet a comparable report has been narrated by Abu Damrah, from Nafiʿ ibn ʿAbd Allah, from Farwah ibn Qays, from ʿAtaʾ ibn Abi Rabah, from Ibn ʿUmar.
Maʿmar narrates—from Qatadah—regarding the verse, “Those who find fault with such of the believers as give freely” (al-Tawbah 9:79).
He said: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAwf donated half of his wealth—four thousand dinars. Some of the hypocrites then remarked, “ʿAbd al-Rahman is displaying tremendous ostentation” (4).
