ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd (1) narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Isḥāq informed us; ʿUmārah ibn Zādhān related, from Thābit, from Anas:
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ migrated, he established a bond of brotherhood between ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf and ʿUthmān—so this report states. ʿUthmān said, ‘I own two orchards; choose whichever of them you wish.’ ʿAbd al-Raḥmān replied, ‘Rather, just direct me to the marketplace.’ … Anas continued: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān’s wealth increased until seven hundred pack-animals laden with wheat, flour, and other provisions were once brought to him. When the caravan entered Madinah, the people heard a great rumble, and the news reached ʿĀʾishah. She said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “ʿAbd al-Raḥmān will not enter Paradise except by crawling.”’
“When this was reported to him, he said, ‘Mother! I call you to witness that the whole caravan, with its loads and its gear, is in the path of Allah.’ (2)
Imam Aḥmad recorded this in his Musnad, on the authority of ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn Ḥassān from ʿUmārah, and he said: ‘This ḥadith is munkar.’
I (the author) say: In Aḥmad’s wording she said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “I saw ʿAbd al-Raḥmān entering Paradise by crawling.”’ He responded, ‘If I am able, I shall enter it standing,’ and he gave the entire caravan—saddles (3) and loads alike—in the path of Allah.
