Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

From Ḥasan ibn ʿUmar, from Sahlah bint ʿĀṣim, who said:
“ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf was fair-skinned, large-eyed, with long lashes and an aquiline nose. His two upper canines were unusually long—so long that one of them would sometimes cut his lip. His hair hung below his ears, his neck was long, and his shoulders were broad.”

Ziyād al-Bakkāʾī transmitted from Ibn Isḥāq, who said:
“He had lost his two upper incisors and there was a gap; he was left-handed and walked with a limp. On the day of Uḥud he was struck, his teeth were broken, and he received twenty wounds, some of them in his leg, which caused the limp. (1)”

Al-Wāqidī related: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, from Yaʿqūb ibn ʿUtbah, who said:
“ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was a tall man, handsome-faced, with delicate skin. His complexion was fair with a rosy tinge, and he never dyed his grey hair. (2)”

Ibn Isḥāq also said: Ṣāliḥ ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf narrated to us, from his father, who said:
“We were travelling with ʿUthmān on the road to Mecca when he caught sight of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf. ʿUthmān said, ‘No one can claim any superiority over this elder—let alone the distinction of having taken part in both migrations.’”

A similar report was conveyed by al-ʿAqdi, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from his father, from al-Misbār ibn Makhramah. Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad and a group of scholars informed us, saying:
“ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar informed us; Abū al-Waqt informed us; Abū al-Ḥasan al-Dāwūdī informed us; Abū Muḥammad ibn Ḥammūyah informed us; Ibrāhīm ibn Khuzaym informed us; he narrated to us…”
