Al-Madaʾinī said: ʿAbd al-Rahmān was born ten years after the Year of the Elephant.
Al-Zubayr said: al-Ḥārith ibn Zuhrah fathered ʿAbd and ʿAbd Allāh; their mother was Qaylah.
From ʿAbd’s descendants came ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn ʿAwf ibn ʿAbd ʿAwf ibn ʿAbd.
Ibn Isḥāq and Ibn Saʿd recorded his lineage in that form, whereas al-Bukhārī and al-Fasawī (1) omitted one “ʿAbd,” and the same omission is found in the reports of ʿUrwah and al-Zuhrī before them.
Al-Haytham al-Shāshī, Abū Naṣr al-Kalābādhī, and others held that the line is: ʿAbd ʿAwf ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥārith ibn Zuhrah.
As for ʿAbd al-Rahmān’s mother, a group of authorities state that she was al-Shifāʾ bint ʿAwf ibn ʿAbd ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Zuhrah.
Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim said that she was Ṣafiyya bint ʿAbd Manāf ibn Zuhrah ibn Kilāb. Another opinion says she was al-Shifāʾ bint ʿAwf.
Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd narrated: “My father told me, from his father, from ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn ʿAwf, who said: ‘My name was ʿAbd ʿAmr, but when I accepted Islam the Messenger of Allah ﷺ named me ʿAbd al-Rahmān.’” (2)
Ibrāhīm ibn al-Munḏir stated: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Thābit narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn Ziyād,
