Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Thus, although the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were all upright, some of them were more upright than others and more firmly reliable (1). In this episode ʿUmar was satisfied with the report of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, whereas in the matter of seeking permission (2) he said: “Bring someone who will bear witness with you.” Likewise, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib used to say: “Whenever a man related something to me from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ I would make him swear an oath; yet Abu Bakr related something to me—and Abu Bakr spoke the truth (3).” Therefore ʿAlī saw no need to put al-Ṣiddīq under oath. Allah knows best.

(1) Omitted from the printed edition. (2) Reported by Ahmad 4/393, 398, 400, 403, 410, 417; by al-Bukhari (no. 6245, Book of Seeking Permission, chapter: “Greeting and asking leave three times”); by Muslim (no. 2153, Book of Manners, chapter: Seeking Permission); by Abu Dawud (nos. 5180-5184, Book of Manners, same chapter); by al-Tirmidhi (no. 2691, Book of Seeking Permission, same chapter); by Ibn Majah (no. 3706, Book of Manners, chapter: Seeking Permission); and by al-Darimi 2/274, Book of Seeking Permission, chapter: Asking leave three times. Muslim’s wording runs: Busr b. Saʿid said, “I heard Abu Saʿid al-Khudri relate: ‘I was sitting in a gathering of the Ansar in Madinah when Abu Musa came to us, frightened or alarmed. We asked, “What is the matter?” He replied, “ʿUmar sent for me. I went to his door, greeted him with salam three times, and received no reply, so I turned back. When he later asked why I had not come in, I told him that I had greeted three times without being answered and therefore went away, for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: ‘When one of you seeks permission three times and is not granted it, let him return.’ ʿUmar said, ‘Produce proof, or I will punish you.’ Ubayy b. Kaʿb said, ‘Only the youngest among us will testify for him.’ Abu Saʿid continued, ‘I said, I am the youngest, so take me to testify.’” In Abu Dawud’s version (no. 5184) ʿUmar adds, “I did not suspect you, but I feared people might attribute to the Messenger of Allah something he did not say.” (3) Chain sound. Reported by Ahmad 1/2/10 and by Abu Dawud (no. 1521, Book of Prayer, chapter: Supplication for forgiveness) through Abu ʿAwanah, from ʿUthman b. al-Mughira al-Thaqafi, from ʿAli b. Rabiʿa al-Asadi, from Asmaʾ b. al-Hakam al-Fazari, who said: I heard ʿAli (Allah be pleased with him) say: “When I heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace), Allah made me benefit from it as He willed. But when someone else from his Companions narrated to me, I would ask him to swear an oath; if he swore, I believed him. Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) told me—and he is truthful—that he heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘Whenever a servant commits a sin, then perfects his purification, stands to pray two rakaʿat, and seeks Allah’s forgiveness, Allah forgives him.’ Then he recited: ‘Those who, when they commit an obscenity or wrong themselves, remember Allah…’ up to ‘…and who do not persist knowingly in what they have done’ (Al-ʿImran 3:135).
