between every maḥram among the Magians, and forbid them from their zamzamah (ritual humming).
So we executed three female sorcerers, and we began to separate every man from the female relative forbidden to him according to the Book of Allah. He then prepared a large banquet, invited the Magians, placed the sword upon his thigh, and poured out the load of one—or perhaps two—mules’ worth of silver. They ate without zamzamah, and ʿUmar had not been taking the jizya from the Magians until ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf testified that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taken it from the Magians of Hajar (1).
This is a singular hadith; it is recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Sunan Abī Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, and al-Tirmidhī through the transmission of Sufyān, and it has come down to us as a substitute (2). Ḥajjāj ibn Arṭāṭa also narrated it succinctly from ʿAmr.
Abū Dāwūd likewise reported the portion concerning the collection of jizya from the Magians (3) from a trustworthy transmitter, from Yaḥyā ibn Ḥassān, from Hushaym, from Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, from Qushayr ibn ʿAmr, from Bajālah ibn ʿAbadah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from Ibn ʿAwf.
Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-ʿAlawī informed us; Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Qaṭīʿī informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Mujallad informed us. (ḥ)
We were also informed by Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq al-Zāhid; Abū Naṣr ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad al-Taymī informed us; Hibat Allāh ibn Aḥmad al-Shiblī informed us. They both said:
Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Hāshimī (4) informed us; Abū Ṭāhir al-Mukhalliṣ informed us; ʿAbd Allāh al-Baghawī narrated to us; Abū Naṣr al-Tammār narrated to us; al-Qāsim ibn Faḍl al-Ḥuddānī narrated to us, from al-Naḍr ibn Shaybān, who said:
‘I said to Abū Salamah, “Relate something you heard from your father, which he reports from…’”}
