Shuʿbah narrated, from Manṣūr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who said: “I heard al-Shaʿbī say: ‘I met five hundred—indeed, more—of the Companions, all of them affirming: ʿAlī, ʿUthmān, Ṭalḥah, and al-Zubayr are in Paradise.’”
I (the author) say: That is because they are counted among the ten who were promised Paradise, among the veterans of Badr, among those who pledged at al-Riḍwān, and among the earliest pioneers of Islam—those about whom the Most High declared that He is pleased with them and they with Him. All four were killed and granted martyrdom. We therefore love them and detest the four men who killed them.
Abū Usāmah reported: Hishām ibn ʿUrwah narrated to us, from his father, from al-Zubayr, who said:
“On the Day of Badr I confronted ʿUbaydah ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ. He was fully armored so that only his eyes were visible, and he was nicknamed Abū Dhāt al-Karish. I charged him with the ʿanazah (1) and drove it into his eye, and he died.
“I was later told that al-Zubayr said: ‘I planted my foot on him and leaned back; it took all my strength to pull the spear out—for its tip had bent.’”
ʿUrwah added: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him for that spear, so he gave it to him. When the Prophet passed away, he kept it. Abū Bakr then asked for it, and he gave it to him; when Abū Bakr died, ʿUmar requested it, and he gave it to him; when ʿUmar was killed, he took it back. Later ʿUthmān asked for it, and he handed it over; when ʿUthmān was killed (2) it came into the possession of the family of ʿAlī. ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr sought it thereafter, and it remained with him until he was killed (3).”
This report is singular; al-Bukhārī alone transmitted it.
Ibn al-Mubārak said: Hishām informed us, from his father, that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
