Hisham ibn ʿUrwah, on the authority of his father, from Ibn al-Zubayr (1), who in turn reported from his own father, said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ invoked both his parents on my behalf. (2)”
Ibn Abī ʿAsrūn informed us; Abū Rawḥ related to us; Tamīm (3) the Qur’an-reciter related to us; Abū Saʿd the litterateur related to us; Abū ʿAmr al-Ḥīrī related to us; Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī related to us; Hawtharah ibn Ashras related to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated from Hisham ibn ʿUrwah, from his father:
Ibn al-Zubayr once said to him, “Father, I saw you charging on your chestnut horse on the Day of the Trench.”
He replied, “My son, did you really see me?”
“Yes,” he answered.
He said, “That day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ combined both his parents for your father, saying, ‘Shoot! May my father and mother be ransomed for you. (4)’”
Ahmad recorded in his Musnad: Abū Usāmah narrated to us; Hisham narrated to us, from his father, from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, who said:
“On the Day of the Trench I and ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah were inside the fortress that housed the Prophet’s wives ﷺ—the fort of Hassan. ʿUmar would hoist me up and I would hoist him; whenever he lifted me I could make out my father as he passed by on his way to Banū Qurayẓah, fighting them. (5)”
(1) The person meant by “Ibn al-Zubayr” is Abd Allah, as explicitly stated in the versions transmitted by Ahmad and Ibn Majah. In the chain cited here, the narrator from him is his brother Urwa, and Abd Allah himself transmits from his father al-Zubayr. Because the printed text confused the matter, the errata table advises the reader to delete the phrase “from Ibn al-Zubayr.”
(2) Reported by Ahmad, 1/164; and by Ibn Majah, no. 123 (Introduction, chapter: The merits of al-Zubayr). It also appears in al-Istiyab, 3/314, and in al-Isaba, 4/8.
(3) Omitted from the printed edition.
(4) All the transmitters are reliable; see the documentation of the following hadith.
(5) Chain of transmission sound. It is found in the Musnad, 1/164; the full wording continues: “He fought alongside the Messenger of Allah on the Day of the Trench. The Prophet said, ‘Who will go to Banu Qurayza and fight them?’ When he returned I said, ‘Father, by Allah, I recognized you as you went off to Banu Qurayza!’ He replied, ‘My son, by Allah, the Messenger of Allah would join both his parents together in pledging them for my ransom, saying: ‘May my father and mother be ransomed for you.’” Ahmad also records it, 1/166, and al-Bukhari, no. 3720 (Virtues of the Companions, chapter: Merits of al-Zubayr) gives the same meaning.
