while invoking Allah’s mercy upon him, and he added, “Would that I had died twenty years before this day.” (1)

Zayd ibn Abī Unaysa also narrated—through Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, from his father—that ʿAlī said: “Give the slayer of Talḥa the tidings of the Fire.”
Ibn Abī ʿAṣrūn conveyed to us—through Abū Rūḥ; related by Tamīm; transmitted by Abū Saʿd; reported by Ibn Ḥamdān; from Abū Yaʿlā; narrated by ʿAmr al-Nāqid; from al-Khaḍir ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥarrānī; from Muḥammad ibn Salama, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq; from Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Taymī; from Mālik ibn Abī ʿĀmir—who said:
A man came to Talḥa and asked, “What do you say about this Yemeni—he (2) is more knowledgeable of the Messenger of Allah’s ḥadīth than you are, meaning Abū Hurayra; we hear from him things we never hear from you?”
Talḥa replied, “As for his having heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, things we did not hear, I have no doubt about it. Let me explain: we were people with households, and we would visit the Messenger of Allah morning and evening. He, however, was a poor man with no property; he stationed himself at the very door of the Messenger of Allah. I therefore have no doubt that he heard things we did not. And can you find any upright man who would knowingly attribute to the Messenger of Allah something he never said? (3)”
Mujālid also transmitted—from al-Shaʿbī, from Jābir—that he heard ʿUmar say to Talḥa, “What is it with me…"
