Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Ibn Saʿd said: Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr informed us; Ṣāliḥ ibn Mūsā narrated to us, from Muʿāwiya ibn Isḥāq, from ʿĀʾisha and Umm Isḥāq, the two daughters of Ṭalḥah, who said:

Our father was wounded on the day of Uḥud with twenty-four injuries. One was a square gash to his head; his nasah—the main vein—was cut; one of his fingers was rendered useless, and the remaining wounds were spread over his body. He fainted, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had his incisor broken and his face gashed and had likewise fallen unconscious. Ṭalḥah was carrying him, retreating backwards; whenever one of the idolaters caught up with him he fought him off, until he set the Prophet down in the mountain pass (1).

Ibn ʿUyaynah reported from Ṭalḥah ibn Yaḥyā: My grandmother Saʿdā bint ʿAwf al-Muriyyah told me:

I once entered upon Ṭalḥah when he looked disheartened (2).

I said, “What is the matter? Has something from your family disturbed you?”

He replied, “No, by Allah—and what an excellent Muslim wife you are! But I have money in my possession that has burdened me.”

I said, “Why let it trouble you? Distribute it among your people.”

So he called, “Boy, summon my clan for me,” and he divided the money among them.

I asked the treasurer, “How much did he give away?”

He said, “Four hundred thousand.” (3)

Hishām and ʿAwf narrated from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī:

Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allah once sold a tract of land for seven hundred thousand. The sheer size of that sum kept him awake the entire night, and when dawn broke he dispersed it.

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd said: Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar related to us; Mūsā ibn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Taymī related to us, from his father, who said:

Ṭalḥah’s estates in Iraq yielded him four hundred thousand a year, and those in the Sarāt (4)
