Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

from Ḥaḍramawt—seven hundred thousand—and he spent the whole night tossing and turning.

His wife asked, “What is wrong with you?”

He replied, “I have been pondering since last night, saying to myself: What must a man think of his Lord when he goes to bed while such wealth is lying in his house?”

She said, “Then why not remember some of your companions? When morning comes, call for large bowls and platters and distribute it.”

He answered, “May Allah have mercy on you! You are a woman whom Allah has guided, daughter of a guided man.” She was Umm Kulthūm, daughter of the Truthful One (Abū Bakr).

When morning came he called for the bowls and divided the money among the Emigrants and the Helpers, sending one bowlful to ʿAlī.

His wife then said, “Abū Muḥammad! Was there no share for us in this money?”

He replied, “And where were you until now? Whatever is left is yours.”

She said, “What remained was a purse containing about one thousand dirhams.”

Al-Musallam ibn ʿAllān and a group informed us in writing, saying: ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad informed us, Hibat Allāh ibn al-Ḥuṣayn informed us, Ibn Ghaylān informed us, Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated to us, Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī narrated to us, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn Yaʿlā narrated to us, al-Ḥasan ibn Dīnār, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, who said:

A Bedouin came to Ṭalḥah asking him for help, invoking their kinship. Ṭalḥah said, “That is indeed a tie of kinship no one before you has invoked with me. I own a piece of land for which ʿUthmān has offered me three hundred thousand; take the land, or, if you prefer, I will sell it to ʿUthmān and hand you the price.”

The man said, “The price.” So Ṭalḥah gave it to him.

Al-Kudaymī (1) reported: al-Aṣmaʿī narrated to us, Ibn ʿImrān, the judge of Madinah, narrated to us that Ṭalḥah ransomed ten of the captives of Badr with his own wealth, and that on another occasion a man asked him by a bond of kinship. Ṭalḥah said, “I have sold an orchard of mine for seven hundred thousand, and I still hold the option; if you wish, take the orchard, and if you wish, take its price.”

Its chain of transmission is broken, and al-Kudaymī is weak as well.

(1) al-Kudaymi: Muhammad ibn Yunus ibn Musa al-Kudaymi al-Basri is classed among the abandoned narrators; see al-Mizan, 4/74. The printed edition mistakenly renders his name as al-Karimi (with the letter ra).
