Duḥaym reported: Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah narrated to us, from Mūsā ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ, who said:
“Ṭalḥah purchased a well in the vicinity of the mountain, then slaughtered a camel and fed the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘You are Ṭalḥah al-Fayyāḍ (1).’ ”
Sulaymān ibn Ayyūb ibn ʿĪsā ibn Mūsā ibn Ṭalḥah said: My father (2) narrated to me, from my grandfather, from Mūsā ibn Ṭalḥah, from his father, who said:
“On the Day of Uḥud the Prophet ﷺ called him Ṭalḥah al-Khayr; during the expedition of Dhī al-ʿUshayrah (3) he called him Ṭalḥah al-Fayyāḍ; and on the day of Khaybar he called him Ṭalḥah al-Jūd (4).”
Its chain of transmission is lenient.
Mujālid narrated, from al-Shaʿbī, from Qabīṣah ibn Jābir, who said:
“I accompanied Ṭalḥah, and I never saw anyone who gave more abundant wealth without being asked (5).”
Abū Ismāʿīl al-Tirmidhī reported: Sulaymān ibn Ayyūb ibn Sulaymān ibn ʿĪsā ibn Mūsā narrated to us; my father narrated to me, from my grandfather, from Mūsā, from his father:
“Large sums of money reached him from….”
(1) The isnad is weak because of Musa b. Muhammad. Al-Haythami cites the report in Majmaʿ, 9/148, saying: “Al-Tabarani transmitted it, and it contains Musa b. Muhammad b. Ibrahim, who is unanimously judged weak.” The narration is also found in al-Istiʿab, 5/235, and in al-Isaba, 5/232.
(2) The words “haddathani abi” (my father narrated to me) are missing from the printed edition.
(3) The autograph reads ghazwat al-ʿusra, which is incorrect; the printed edition further distorted it to “al-ʿumra.” We have adopted the reading found in al-Tabarani. After quoting the hadith, he explains that both spellings—one with sin and one with shin—occur: with sin it means “hardship,” whereas with shin it is the name of a locality. The Prophet ﷺ did in fact campaign at Dhu al-ʿUshayra, a site near Yanbuʿ between Mecca and Madina.
(4) Reported by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, nos. 197 and 218, and by al-Hakim, 3/374. Al-Haythami mentions it in Majmaʿ, 9/147, attributing it to al-Tabarani and noting that the chain contains narrators he does not know. Sulayman b. Ayyub al-Talhi has been declared trustworthy by some and weak by others. Al-Hakim and al-Tabarani read “and on the day of Hunayn” in place of “and on the day of Khaybar.”
(5) Reported by Ibn Saʿd, 3/1/157; al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, no. 194; and Abu Nuʿaym in Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ, 1/88. It is also recorded in al-Isaba, 5/235.
