ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muljam al-Murādī, the assassin of ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him).
A lying Kharijite. Ibn Yūnus records in his “History of Egypt”: “He witnessed the conquest of Egypt, marked out a plot there alongside the notables, and was counted among those who had mastered the Qur’an and jurisprudence. He belonged to the Banū Tadūl and was their champion horseman in Egypt. He recited the Qur’an to Muʿādh ibn Jabal and was one of the devoted worshippers. It is said that he was the one who sent Ṣubaygh al-Tamīmī to ʿUmar to ask about the obscure passages of the Qur’an.”
It is also related that ʿUmar wrote to ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ: “Bring the house of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muljam closer to the mosque so that he may teach the people the Qur’an and jurisprudence.” His dwelling was accordingly enlarged, and it stood next to the house of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUdays al-Balawī—one of those who aided in the killing of ʿUthmān.
Later Ibn Muljam became one of ʿAlī’s partisans in Kūfah; he travelled to him there and fought alongside him at Ṣiffīn.
I (the author) say: fate then overtook him, and he did what he did. The Khārijites consider him one of the best of the community, and the Nuṣayriyyah likewise venerate him.
The jurist Abū Muḥammad Ibn Ḥazm said: “They claim that Ibn Muljam is the worthiest person on earth; he released the divine spirit from the darkness and dross of the body.”
So marvel, O Muslims, at such madness!
ʿImrān ibn Ḥiṭṭān the Kharijite composed these verses about Ibn Muljam:
O righteous blow! Its only aim
was to attain the pleasure of the Lord of the Throne.
Whenever I recall him, I deem him
the most weighty before God in the balance of mankind.
In the eyes of the Rāfiḍites, Ibn Muljam is the most wretched of creatures in the Hereafter. As for us, the Ahl al-Sunnah, we hope he will enter the Fire, while conceding that Allah may pardon him, not as they say
