Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

His prestige continued to rise; then he was removed, spent a period in prison, was released, and appointed supervisor of the Sawād districts. He next held the chair at the Niẓāmiyya, was deposed yet again, and, when the Chief Justice Ibn Muqbil was dismissed from the professorship of the Mustanṣiriyya in 633 AH, Zanjānī was given the post.

Ẓahīr al-Dīn ʿAlī al-Kāzarūnī (1) told me: “Among those who were deliberately executed while in captivity were: the Caliph al-Mustaʿṣim, put to death in Ṣafar 656 AH; his two sons; his paternal uncles; Ḥusayn and Yaḥyā, the two paternal uncles of his father; the dawādār (chief secretary) Mujāhid al-Dīn, son-in-law of the ruler of Mosul; King Sulaymān Shāh, eighty years old; Sanjar the shihna (military governor); Muḥammad ibn Qayrān, an amīr; al-Baqarā, formerly shihna; Balbān al-Mustanṣirī; Ibn al-Jawzī, the ustādh al-dār (master of the palace), together with his sons Abū Yūsuf, ʿAbd al-Karīm, and ʿAbd Allāh; Shaykh Shihāb al-Dīn Maḥmūd ibn Aḥmad al-Zanjānī, the leading scholar of his day and author of many works; Sharaf al-Dīn ibn Sukaynata; and others he listed.”

The daughters of al-Kāmil:

  1. al-Khātūn bint Muḥammad ibn al-ʿĀdil
She was the mother of Sultan al-Malik al-Nāṣir Yūsuf, ruler of Syria and son of al-Malik al-ʿAzīz. She is al-Ṣāḥiba al-Khātūn, daughter of Sultan al-Malik al-Kāmil Muḥammad ibn al-ʿĀdil.

She died at al-Rastan while on her way to Ḥamāh, in Dhū al-Qiʿda 655 AH.

Her sister, the Lady of Ḥamāh, passed away only a few days earlier.

See Dr. Mustafa Jawad’s introduction to Mukhtasar al-Tarikh, pp. 18–20. (*) Detailed accounts of these women are found in al-Dhahabi’s Tarikh al-Islam, vol. 20, fol. 142 (Aya Sofya MS 3013).
