He died on the nineteenth of Shaʿbān in the year 650 AH. I was present at his burial in his residence in the Tâhirid Precinct. After I had left Baghdad his body was transported to Mecca, where he was laid to rest, for he had so directed and had set aside fifty dinars for whoever would convey him.
ʿAbd al-Muʾmin ibn Khalaf, the ḥāfiẓ, narrated to us; al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad al-Qurashī narrated to us; Abū al-Futūḥ al-Nihāwandī in Mecca narrated to us; Abū Ṭālib Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAlawī narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Tustarī narrated to us; al-Qāsim ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Abū ʿAlī al-Luʾluʾī narrated to us; Abū Dāwūd related to us; ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah related to us; Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyā and Yazīd ibn Hārūn related to us, from Hishām ibn Ḥassān, from Muḥammad, from ʿUbayda, from ʿAlī:
that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said on the Day of the Trench, “They kept us from the middle prayer—the ʿAṣr prayer. May Allah fill their houses and their graves with fire.” (1)
This is a sound ḥadith; nothing has been reported that undermines its authenticity.
In that same year there also died: al-Rashīd ibn Maslama; al-Muʾtaman ibn Qumayra; al-Kamāl Isḥāq ibn Aḥmad al-Maʿarrī al-Shāfiʿī, one of the leading imams; the accomplished scribe Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Saʿd al-Maqdisī al-Ḥanbalī; Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī al-Sahl; al-Jamāl Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Maḥmūd ibn al-ʿAsqalānī; al-Tāj Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿd Allah ibn al-Wazzān al-Ḥanafī; Shaykh Saʿd al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn al-Muʾayyad ibn Ḥammūyah al-Juwaynī; Jamāl al-Dīn Hibat Allah ibn Muḥammad ibn Mufarrij al-Maqdisī—later called al-Iskandarānī—who transmitted from al-Silafī; and Fakhr al-Quḍāt Naṣr Allah ibn Abī al-ʿIzz ibn Qaṣāfa, the scribe.
