Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

182* – Ibn Abī al-Saʿādāt, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Baghdādī
The eminent scholar and jurist-consult, Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad, son of Abū Bakr ʿAbd Allāh, son of Abī al-Saʿādāt Muḥammad al-Baghdādī—nicknamed al-Dabbās—was a Ḥanbalī and a distinguished Qur’an reciter.
A master of tajwīd and a thoroughly grounded jurist, he was born about 570 AH.
He auditioned hadith from Abū al-Fatḥ Shātīl, Naṣr Allāh al-Qazzāz, and a number of others.
Pursuing knowledge on his own initiative, he read to the pupils of Ibn al-Ḥuṣayn and to the judge of the bīmāristān (hospital).
He studied law under Abū al-Fatḥ Ibn al-Mannī and ʿAlī al-Nuqānī the Shāfiʿī.
Gifted in dialectics and the literature of legal disagreement, he engaged in public debates, supervised the waqf of the hospital, and served as an instructor at the Mustanṣiriyya. A man of piety, devotion, and asceticism, he dedicated himself to teaching; no youthful indiscretion was ever ascribed to him. He was witty, eloquent, grammatically precise, and kept his distance from the political elite.
Ibn al-Najjār transmitted from him, praised him, and held him in high esteem.
I have read his obituary in the handwriting of Shaykh Kamāl al-Dīn Ibn al-Fūṭī: he died on the night of Friday, the twenty-first of Shaʿbān 648 AH, and was buried at Bāb Ḥarb. He had reached—or very nearly reached—eighty years of age.
