181 – Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd al-ʿUbaydī
The grandson of the last Fatimid caliph, al-ʿĀḍid bi-llāh ʿAbd Allāh ibn the emir Yūsuf ibn al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿUbaydī.

The Ismaili daʿwa centred on him, yet he spent his life confined in the Citadel of the Mountain. In spite of his glaring ignorance and dullness, the sect held exaggerated beliefs about him. When al-ʿĀḍid died he left only a small boy, whom Saladin placed under arrest. As the youth grew older, his partisans schemed: they smuggled a slave-girl to him disguised as a page; he impregnated her, she was spirited away, and in Upper Egypt she bore this child—Sulaymān ibn Dāwud—who was then hidden and styled “al-Ḥāmid li-llāh.”

Later al-Malik al-Kāmil laid hands on him and kept him imprisoned until he died there without issue, though ignorant people still claim he left a secret son. Sulaymān died in Shawwāl, 645 AH. After him there remained an aged cousin named Qāsim, likewise in custody, but their lineage is widely disputed. As for Dāwud, he had died earlier, in the days of al-ʿĀdil.
