Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Al-Khidr ibn Ḥammūya informed me, saying: “Had their king wished, he could have escaped on horseback, yet he chose instead to shield his own legs; consequently he was captured, together with a number of princes and nobles.(1) When the captives were counted they came to a little over twenty thousand, while seven thousand more were drowned or killed. Never had the Muslims witnessed a day like it, and only about one hundred Muslims fell. The Frankish king ransomed himself by restoring Damietta and paying five hundred thousand dinars.

A letter arrived from al-Muʿaẓẓam stating that, at the beginning of the year, the enemy abandoned their tents and made for Damietta. The sword wrought among them for most of the night and on into daylight; we killed thirty thousand of them, not counting those who flung themselves into the water. As for the prisoners—their numbers were like the sea itself, beyond all reckoning.

Late in Muḥarram they killed al-Muʿaẓẓam.

In that same year the ruler of Aleppo seized Damascus, then marched to take Egypt. He routed the Egyptians at first, but they rallied, defeated him, and killed his deputy.

Luʾluʾ gained control of Jazīrat Ibn ʿUmar, and its ruler was killed in the year nine.

In the year fifty the Tatars raided Mayyāfāriqīn and Saruj under Kishlūkhān the Mongol.

In the year fifty-one the Muslims captured Sidon, whose inhabitants fled to their citadel.

That same year the daughter of ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn, lord of Rūm, arrived; the ruler of Damascus, al-Malik al-Nāṣir, married her in a celebrated wedding for which domed pavilions were erected. At the time there was discord between al-Nāṣir and the Egyptian ruler al-Muʿizz, but after a while peace was concluded.
