al-Nasir li-Din Allah — Ahmad, son of al-Mustadiʿ bi-Amr Allah Hasan, son of al-Mustanjid billah Yusuf, son of al-Muqtafi, the Abbasid Baghdadi, the benefactor who endowed the unrivalled Mustansiriyyah.
He was born in 588 AH.
His mother was a Turk. He was fair-skinned with blond hair, stout, of medium height, handsome in appearance, intelligent, resolute, politically adept, possessed of sound judgment, shrewdness, and fully capable of bearing the burdens of rule. His grandfather al-Nasir loved him and used to call him “the Judge” because of his love of justice and his keen intellect.
He received the private oath of allegiance upon his father’s death on Friday, 13 Rajab 623 AH, from his brothers, cousins, and household. The next day the leading notables, scholars, and commanders offered him the public pledge.
Ibn al-Najjar said: “He spread justice, promoted good works, brought scholars and the righteous close, built mosques, schools, ribats, guesthouses, and hospitals, distributed stipends, suppressed rebels, set people upon the soundest path, improved the pilgrimage roads, established infirmaries in the Two Sanctuaries, and sent them medicines.”
