Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

ʿIkrimah reported on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: We set out with ʿAlī for the Day of the Camel, six hundred men in all, taking the road that passes through al-Rabadhah. Then his son al-Ḥasan stepped forward, wept before him, and said, “Grant me permission to speak.” ʿAlī replied, “Speak, but spare me the wailing of a young girl.” Al-Ḥasan said, “I had previously advised you to remain, and I repeat that counsel now. The Arabs will swing back; when their scattered wits return to them, they will spur their camels toward you to bring you out, even if you were hiding in a lizard’s hole.” ʿAlī answered, “Do you think—may you lose your father—that I have been sitting, waiting like a hyena that is lured by blows?” A similar account is transmitted through two other chains.

Rawḥ ibn ʿUbādah narrated: Abū Nuʿāmah al-ʿAdawī told us, Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl told us, from Ḥujayz ibn al-Rabīʿ, that ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn sent him to the clan of Banū ʿAdī with the message, “Go to them.” When he arrived he said, “He conveys his greetings of peace and says: ‘I am a sincere well-wisher to you. He swears by Allah that to live as an abandoned, mutilated man herding sheep on the summit of a mountain until death overtakes him is dearer to him than to shoot a single arrow at either of the two camps. So hold back—may my father and mother be your ransom.’”

They replied, “Leave us alone! By Allah, we will never abandon the burden entrusted to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ.” So they fought on the Day of the Camel, and around ʿĀ’ishah that day seventy men who had memorised the entire Quran were killed, and those who had not memorised it were even more.

Al-Wāqidī related from his informants: Yaʿlā ibn Munyah al-Tamīmī—an ally of Banū Nawfal ibn ʿAbd Manāf and governor of al-Jund for ʿUthmān—arrived for the pilgrimage in the year ʿUthmān was killed.

Ibn Abī Mulaykah reported: Yaʿlā ibn Umayyah came to ʿĀ’ishah while she was on pilgrimage and said, “The caliph you were urging people against has been killed.” She replied, “I declare my innocence before Allah of his killer.”
