He passed away in the year 642 AH (1). Ibn Hārūn wrote to me that he had heard from Ibn al-Taylasān the book al-Waʿd in the category of al-ʿawālī (narrations with elevated chains).
88 – Ibn al-ʿAjamī, ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Shāfiʿī
He came from a family in Aleppo distinguished for scholarship and standing. The erudite scholar, Kamāl al-Dīn, Abū Hāshim (2) ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥasan (3) al-Shāfiʿī studied jurisprudence under Tāhir ibn Jahbal and heard ḥadīth from Yaḥyā al-Thaqafī and others.
It is reported that he completed twenty-five full lecture series on al-Muhadhdhab.
He was afflicted with obsessive misgivings concerning water (ritual purity).
Among those who narrated from him were ʿAbbās ibn Bazwān and others.
He died in the month of Rajab (4), in 642 AH, at the age of eighty-five (5).
(1) Ibn al-Abbar, Ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Marrakushi, and al-Dhahabi (Taʾrikh al-Islam) all state that he died in the month of Rabiʿ al-Akhir.
(*) In Sila al-Takmila, Sharaf al-Din al-Husayni (folio attached to fol. 17, obituaries for the year 642 AH) traces his lineage as follows: Abu al-Qasim ʿUmar b. al-Shaykh Abi Salih ʿAbd al-Rahim b. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. al-Hasan b. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Tahir b. Muhammad b. Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. ʿAli al-Karabisi al-Halabi al-Shafiʿi, known as Ibn al-ʿAjami and surnamed al-Kamal …; see also al-Dhahabi, Taʾrikh al-Islam (Aya Sofya 3013), vol. 20, fol. 20.
(2) Al-Husayni’s Sila al-Takmila gives his kunya as Abu al-Qasim.
(3) Al-Isnawi reads the name as al-Husayn, not al-Hasan; he notes this in the entry on ʿAbd al-Rahman, the subject’s grandfather (Tabaqat al-Shafiʿiyya, 1/440, no. 396). This is a copyist’s error.
(4) Both al-Husayni (Sila) and al-Dhahabi (Taʾrikh al-Islam) record his death on the eleventh of Rajab.
(5) Al-Husayni dates his birth to the thirteenth of Muharram; al-Dhahabi follows him and specifies the year as 557 AH.
