and was laid to rest beside Ahmad ibn Ḥanbal. Some people claimed that he had actually been placed in the very same grave; this had been done by a crowd of unruly commoners. Those responsible were arrested, punished, and imprisoned. A few days later Abū Ṣāliḥ was exhumed at night and re-interred—may Allah have mercy on him—in a grave of his own.
Those who received authorization (ijāzah) to transmit his narrations include: Fakhr Ibn ʿAsākir, Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥātim, Fāṭimah bint Sulaymān, the Hanbalī judge, Saʿd al-Dīn, ʿĪsā al-Muṭʿim, Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Dāʾim, Abū al-ʿAbbās Ibn al-Shiḥnah, Abū Naṣr Ibn al-Shīrāzī, and others.
Abū al-Maʿālī Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq informed us—during my own audition—that Naṣr ibn ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed you; Fāṭimah bint ʿAlī al-Waqāyātī informed us in the year 569 AH. She said:
“Aḥmad ibn al-Muẓaffar al-Tammār informed us; Abū al-Qāsim al-Ḥurfī (1) informed us; Ḥamzah ibn Muḥammad al-Dihqān informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā ibn Ḥayyān narrated to us; Shuʿayb ibn Ḥarb narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us; Muḥill (2) al-Ḍabbī narrated to us:
I heard ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim relating from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: ‘Shield yourselves from the Fire, even if only with half a date; and if you cannot find even that, then with a kind word.’” (3)
