It was likewise transmitted by Maymūn Abū ʿAbd-Allāh, from Zayd ibn Arqam in similar wording, and it appears that Shuʿbah possessed the report through two separate chains; the first was recorded by Bundar, from Ghundar, on his authority.
Kāmil Abū al-ʿAlāʾ related—from Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, from Yaḥyā ibn Jaʿdah, from Zayd ibn Arqam—that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to ʿAlī on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm: “For whomever I am his patron, ʿAlī is his patron.”
A similar narration comes from Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, who said that he heard ʿAlī call the people to witness in the square. An equivalent report was also cited by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad in the Musnad of his father, through Simāk ibn ʿUbayd, from Ibn Abī Laylā. It has further chains that the scholar Ibn ʿAsākir gathered in the biography of ʿAlī, each corroborating the others.
Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated—from ʿAlī ibn Zayd and Abū Hārūn, from ʿAddī ibn Thābit, from al-Barāʾ—who said: “We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, during the Farewell Pilgrimage. When we reached Ghadīr Khumm, a space was cleared for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, beneath two trees, and someone called out among the people: ‘Gather for prayer.’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, summoned ʿAlī, took him by the hand, and stood him at his right side, then said, ‘Am I not closer to every believer than he is to himself?’ They replied, ‘Indeed you are.’ He then said, ‘So this man is the patron of everyone whose patron I am. O Allah, befriend those who befriend him and oppose those who oppose him.’ ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb met him afterwards and said, ‘Congratulations, O ʿAlī! From morning till night you are the patron of every believing man and woman.’ ”
ʿAbd al-Razzāq likewise recorded it from Maʿmar, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd.
ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā—and others—narrated it from ʿĪsā ibn ʿUmar al-Qāriʾ, from
